This conference, designed for Eagle Scouts only by the Freedoms Foundation is a 4 day conference focusing on the development and values of United States from the revolution to today.  The Virginia Scouting team has a standing invitation to take VFW Scout of the year applicants to the conference which is held in February of each year.  Unfortunately weather and school testing schedules reduced ability of scouts to attend.  We took only two Scouts and hope for better conditions next year.

The program was fabulous providing Scouts the opportunity to meet and discuss issues with Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton about how the government should be organized. They also worked with two college professors to review strategies and effects on individual freedoms as the result of implementation of various laws.  A tour of Valley Forge and meeting with re-enactors provided an insight into the early patriot’s situation at the start of the revolution.  They spent time in the Freedom Foundation’ Medal of honor room looking at actual medals of honor from as far back as the Civil War and reviewing pictures and write ups for individual recipients from their own states.  This is a new and fabulous exhibit at the foundation.

We wrapped up the event with a trip to Constitution Hall and the Liberty Bell and of course a Philadelphia Hoagie for lunch.  It was a fantastic experience every Eagle Scout should experience.

One of the key things at Freedoms Foundation is the Medal of Honor Grove with a separate state area and obelisk; with names of MOH holders form that state for all 50 states.   It is in need of maintenance and support.  Several states have placed their flag n their section.  This is an open opportunity for VFW veterans to help maintain this permanent recognition of all MOH holders.
